Chef Ken Trickilo
started his career in the kitchen as a high school student. He worked at a country club because he just needed a part time job. This is where he fell in love with cooking. When deciding what to do after college, he could only think of one thing, going to culinary school, even though his original plan was to go to school to be an architect. After obtaining his degree from the Culinary Institute of America, he worked for Chef Michael Colemico at his restaurant in Cape May. Afterwards he went on to work with Ed Stone at the Bernards Inn and then Panico’s in New Brunswick. In 1999 he obtained a Sous Chef position at Napa Valley Grill, where he eventually trained to be their head chef, who also traveled around the country opening new restaurants for the company. This is where he perfected his “farm to table” technique, using fresh, seasonal and if possible local ingredients to formulate amazing menus and exquisite cuisine. Here at Liberty House, Chef uses these same methods to create a dining experience in an unmatched locale. Among his many accolades, Chef’s most recent accomplishment was hosting the esteemed James Beard dinner.

Thanks so much for your email. Marissa and I couldn’t have been happier with the way everything at the wedding turned out! It was the most fun we’ve ever had and all our guests echoed the high praise. It was fantastic working with you and your staff- we felt very comfortable and assured the whole time, which is very important when you’re dealing with the stress of wedding planning!
I’m sure we’ll be over to the Liberty House in the near future to relive our big day- we’ll be sure to ask for you and say hello.
Thanks again and best wishes,
Pete & Marissa Sala
Dear Ms. Cretella:
Our sincerest apologies for not writing this letter sooner. My wife and I were married at the Liberty House on February 16, 2013. Upon meeting with Danielle Villa, our wedding planner, we were certain that we had found the perfect venue for our marriage. As it turned out, we were right in our assessment! We never looked at another venue and we never looked back on our decision.
Danielle was amazing, each and every step of the way. She was so easy to talk to. We became extremely comfortable asking her questions and seeking her guidance. We really cannot say enough about her. She was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we met her through the wedding day and brunch the day after, she was warm, friendly, accommodating, efficient, and professional in every way. It is extremely rare, especially these days, to come across someone with not only the required skills to do their job well but to do it with a smile and with the accompanying warmth and honesty. We enjoyed working with her immensely!
Carlo Santini, the restaurant manager was also wonderful and very welcoming each time we came to the Liberty House to meet with Danielle. He made us very comfortable and treated us like family. He even spoke Italian to Pietrina, which she thoroughly enjoyed!
We also met with the head chef, Ken Trickilo, prior to the wedding to discuss my daughter Amanda’s considerable food allergies. He instantly made us comfortable with his ideas and his plan on how he was going to make sure that Amanda ate well and was taken care of on the night of the wedding. He gained our complete trust and confidence, which in this matter is not easy for us to feel. Amanda could not have been more pleased with the food. He made a variety of dishes specifically for her and lots of it as well! She loved every bite! She told us afterwards that she had never had an appetizer before – she was so excited that she finally had!
We also owe thanks to Toni Russo, who did a great job in finding the ideal honeymoon experience for us. She certainly succeeded as we loved the Excellence Playa Mujeres!
Our heartfelt thanks to Danielle, Carlo, Ken, Toni, and to all the other employees of Landmark Hospitality who were there that night for making our wedding and honeymoon experience one that went beyond our expectations and one that we will never forget!
We will be forever grateful to the staff at the Liberty House and its beautiful decor, ambience, and wonderful view of New York City. Thank you to all for making our wedding night so memorable!
Thomas & Pietrina Alessandro
Thank you SO much for all of your tremendous support planning what we absolutely think was THE best wedding ever. All of our guests are raving about everything, and we owe a large part of that to you and your team.
Katie & Ryan
We can’t begin to thank you enough for making our day absolutely amazing, and even better than we could have ever imagined! You made everything go perfectly and even if things were going wrong, you let us be free from the stress of it. Our guests are still raving about the day, the venue and the food, and my mom continues to say how fantastic both you and Miriam were. Miriam was like a fairy godmother to me on the night, and thought of things I might need before I even did! Having her by my side that night was a blessing and she truly made it amazing for both Mick and myself.
Thank you, thank you from the bottom of both our hearts for all of your hard work (especially in organizing the bridal party and parents for the ceremony and reception entrances!) and the hard work of Miriam and all of the Liberty House staff. Our day was amazing and wonderful and it was because of all of you!!
We hope to be able to see you again on our next visit back home to thank you again in person for all that you’ve done for us.
All the Best Wishes, Blessings and Happiness to you, Danielle!
Love, Sandra and Michael
I know it’s been a few months since our April wedding, but we just wanted to THANK YOU again! We had the most perfect day thanks to you and your staff! You made the entire wedding planning process fun and stress-free (I’m actually sad it’s over now, ha). Our guests are still raving about the food, the venue, and the staff. It was the best day of our lives and we can not thank you enough for all you did to make it a HUGE success. We hope to get back there soon for dinner so we can re-live all the wonderful memories we created that night.
Hope you’re doing well and enjoying the summer!
Katie & Alex Pavia, Married at Liberty House
PS -- I just wrote a review on theknot.com as well and mentioned how wonderful you were to work with!
I just wanted to send you a final/goodbye email to thank you for all you did for us and for how well you accommodated all our special requests and needs. We were so happy with the food, and we received many, many compliments on it from the guests. Emily’s bridal assistant (I forget her name) was a sweetheart and really helpful, and somehow you even were able to order perfect weather for us!
It was a pleasure working with you and the staff at Liberty House; you really made the day special for Em and Andy!
Nancy Anderson, MOB, Emily and Andy’s Wedding
Words really cannot express how thankful we are for your help and guidance through the last year and half. Last night was all we could have dreamt of and more. The weather was perfect, along with everything else.. and the food!!
We are excited to come back for more meals at the Liberty House.
Thanks again for everything, you are incredible!
Courtney & Michael Grosslight
Thank you so much for helping us plan and organize our wedding! We had a great time and our guests said everything turned out amazing. We appreciate you sticking around for our rehearsal and helping us finalize the details for the wedding day. We appreciate all your advice and hard work to make our special day flawless. Thanks again!
Megan and Daniel, Married at Liberty House
Now that the holiday crush is over, I finally have the time to sit down and e-mail you about our daughter’s amazing reception at the Liberty House. I’ve been composing this e-mail in my head for weeks as I hope to convey to you how thoroughly delighted we were with that evening. When we booked the Liberty House last January, I was confident that we had made the right decision, but had no idea how absolutely perfect everything was going to be. Of course the room, with that amazing view, was beyond comparison, then add to that the excellent food and a courteous, caring staff. We couldn’t have been any more pleased.
Your menu suggestions were a hit, especially the whole pig at the cocktail hour, which virtually disappeared. We received positive feedback about the rest of the choices for the cocktail hour and then about the superb main course. Our compliments to the chef!
We’d like to give special thanks to you Danielle as well. From our first meeting, you projected the warmth and confidence that put us all at ease about a wedding reception of this size. Throughout the year you handled everything with professionalism, yet again warmth. At our last meeting you guided us about the final details that made the evening flow without a flaw. The Liberty House should be proud to have you at the helm of their affairs because you definitely know your business and are nothing less than expert at it.
In closing I’d like to relay a comment made to me by an employee of the Hyatt where we stayed following the reception at the Liberty House. She asked me on Sunday morning where our daughter’s wedding was held. After telling her it was at the Liberty House, she said “Well, there were people coming off those shuttles last night saying it was the best wedding that they had ever been to in their lives!” Can’t ask for more than that!
With many thanks,
Pat and Clint Ives, Kristin and Oliver’s Wedding
Dear Mara and Tiffany,
Thank you so much for all you did to make our wedding more than we could have ever imagined! You helped to make us feel so relaxed and at ease throughout the entire process and especially on our wedding day! Thank you very very much!
Jenna and Bill, Married at Liberty House
We can’t thank you enough, Mara, for the many beautiful experiences you helped us to have at the Liberty House. From the ceremony to the reception, everything was perfect, and we have you to thank for that. We had a wonderful time, as did our guests, and we truly appreciate everything you and your staff did to make that possible.
Kate and Kristyn, Liberty House Brides
I want to thank you and everyone at the Liberty House for making our daughter Kathleen’s wedding absolutely amazing! We could not have been happier with everything, from the food to the ambiance to all of the people assisting us throughout the evening! I will make sure I post something on your Facebook page telling everyone how wonderful it was, and I want to thank you especially for coordinating everything!
Sheila Connor, MOB, Kathleen and Matt’s Wedding
I just want to thank you for EVERYTHING that you did. You and your staff made our wedding a night to remember for everyone. People are still telling us how much fun they had and how they enjoyed all the food, drinks and atmosphere.
Thank you for making my wedding dreams come true!
I can’t wait to have another party there!!!!!!
Please let me know who your supervisor is so that I can send them rave reviews of you!!!!
Shea and Peter Williams, Married at Liberty House
Damon and I would just like to thank you and your staff for a wonderful reception. We received numerous compliments about the food, attentive service and atmosphere. We could not have had such a wonderful wedding reception without all of your assistance and advice.
Please give a special thank you to Natalia. She was very attentive and catered to all of our needs.
Thank you (again) for everything.
Nadira and Damon Young, Married at Liberty House
Just wanted to let you know how pleased we were with the wedding last Friday. You did a terrific job.
We received raves from both families about it. Everyone complimented the food and venue as being one of the best weddings they ever attended. Watching the skyline light up during the ceremony was just magical. I thought it was better without the drapery as there was nothing to obscure the panoramic view. Jennifer and Victor were so happy and excited that day. I am forwarding two pictures that a family member took.
Thank you for a professional job well done.
Rose and Mark Muhlenbruch, Jennifer & Victor’s Wedding
I wanted to say Thank You so much for all of your help putting together a fabulous wedding! We got so many compliments on the wedding, specifically the venue, the food, and the fireworks!!
We appreciate you working with us to create such a magical night! I will send you some pictures when they come in from the photographer.
Kristen and Leor Shapiro, Married at Liberty House
Please know that we felt you did an outstanding job taking care of us and making our wedding reception so special. We, along with our family and friends, are still talking about how wonderful everything was. The food, the decor, the view, and the overall fantastic evening we all had will always be remembered.
In fact, James and I would love to come back and have our anniversary dinner at the Liberty House.
Again, thank you for everything you did, and we look forward to seeing you again.
Krista and James Jefferies, Married at Liberty House
I want to send you and the whole team at Liberty House a note and say Thank You!!!
Our wedding on Saturday was amazing and the whole team contributed to the great experience we had! The staff was professional and attended to the our guests in a very fashionable time. My attendant was very sweet and caring -- I was impressed by how she was always by my side.
I was so glad to see you there bright and early in the morning -- you were very helpful and calming
We are very happy we chose Liberty House and I would highly recommend it to everyone. Our friends were blown away by the view, the setup and the beauty!
We would be coming back for lunch/dinner/drinks sometime in the near future!
Clementina and Eddie Mecaj, Married at Liberty House
Everything was absolutely perfect for our wedding! Thank you so much for ensuring that everything ran smoothly! The attendant that helped out Elliot and myself was absolutely wonderful, the food was amazing, everything was just wonderful! I can not even begin to tell you how many compliments we got on everything!
Elliot and I will definitely be back to try out the restaurant.
Suzanne & Elliott Brick, Married at Liberty House
My wife, Liz, and I wanted to drop you a quick note regarding our wedding at Liberty House on June 9. Our night went perfectly.
As an initial matter, the staff catered to our every need. Any requests we had were handled promptly and without question. Everyone was very pleasant and seemed to be working very hard to ensure that Liz and I, as well as our guests, had a great time. In addition, we’ve eaten at Liberty House a few times and have loved the food. But as with any wedding food, we expected the mass produced food on the night of the wedding to not be the same as the food we might get from the restaurant on any other night. As it turned out, both Liz and I (who are quite the amateur food critics) absolutely loved all the food served. I would have been happy with my meal (and in particular my filet mignon) at any top restaurant.
Lastly, but certainly not least, we wanted to note the amazing job Danielle Villa did in making our event into the perfect night that it was. Danielle was the one who met with us when we first booked the Liberty House as our venue over a year and a half ago. Since that time, she always promptly answered our questions, helped managed our parents (who could sometimes be a real pain), accommodated all our unique requests and helped keep a very nervous bride in one piece. The night of the wedding, Danielle was running around behind the scenes making sure everything ran smoothly and in the end, our wedding turned out better than either Liz or I expected, in large part due to Danielle’s hard work. If I thought it were possible, I wouldn’t be surprised if Danielle were responsible for having the sun come out as we started to walk down the aisle.
Anyway, we wanted to pass along our thoughts and thanks to you at Landmark Hospitality, and in particular to Danielle and her staff at Liberty House, for giving us the perfect wedding.
Liz and Lee Jarit, Married at Liberty House
Thank you for everything you did for us for on Sunday! We had the most amazing wedding ever and it wouldn’t have been possible without you and the wonderful staff at the Liberty House. Thanks again for everything!
Lydia and Brendan Keenan, Married at Liberty House
I wanted to send a big thank you for all of your help (patience) and hard work you did to coordinate such a beautiful wedding for us. Russ and I had an absolutely perfect day and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Everything from start to finish is amazing. Literally everyone we have spoke with is saying how wonderful Liberty House is from the location, to the view, to the service -- and they are immensely impressed by the food (so much so -- my friends are planning on coming back soon for dinner!).
Also, Merriam was my saving grace during the day/night. She was there to give me anything/everything I needed -- even before I knew I needed it! She was so great and I really appreciated all of her help.
Thank you again to you and your staff for making our wedding the best day.
All the Best,
Jacqueline and Russell Karas, Married at Liberty House
Sorry that I did not get to this email sooner but all of us having been on a natural “high.”
I don’t know where to start but I will try. When we first came to The Liberty House we were met by a warm, sincere welcome by you. You were willing to help do anything you could to make our celebration wonderful and problem free. Every issue we had, you helped to solve easily, efficiently and willingly.
When we arrived at the venue two days before our party people helped without having to be asked to do so. Favors, place cards, pictures, liquor, baskets, etc. were taken, placed in your office and labeled properly.
Then there was the day of the party. Virginia and Miriam were there to make sure the girls, the family and anyone else was comfortable, fed and made to feel that they were special. Sarah was there to help at the end of the evening making sure that we did not forget anything.
And you, Danielle, are included in the calming, comforting and caring group of people. My family and I continue to get compliments on how wonderful everything was from the venue, the food, the staff and everything else.
Having said all this, my family and I would like to thank you for making our celebration the BEST!
Our thanks and then some,
Lisa Morgan and Mar Verdugo, Married at Liberty House
My daughter’s wedding was at the Liberty House on July 3, 2012. I felt compelled to write this because it is important that you know how pleased we were with all of the services you provided, and particularly pleased with three members of your staff, Mara from the sales department, Virginia the maître d, and Myriam the bridal attendant.
Mara had her eyes on every detail, made sure everything was in order throughout the night, constantly asked if there was anything she could do for us, and even bussed a table at some point in the evening. Virginia was equally helpful, vigilant and proactive in ensuring that every step of the way the evening went on without a hitch—photographs through clean up. Only, the bride, was at ease with who literally took care of her every need from the moment she set foot on the grounds until her legs were in the car on the way back to the hotel.
I cannot say enough about ALL of them and greatly appreciate their hard efforts. Mara, Virginia, and Myriam met every request we had and did it all with grace and a smile. These three women went above and beyond any expectation we could have imagined to make us all feel comfortable and taken care of. Their efforts allowed us to really enjoy ourselves at the party because we had nothing to worry about. They were an integral part of the evening’s success and in making us, our family and our guests feel welcome.
Thank you all for the wonderful memories and excellent experience. Have an enjoyable summer!!

My husband and I are truly grateful to you for making our son’s reception so memorable. Every one had a Blast! Our son and daughter in law had just one word to say it all…’perfect’
From the moment we met you, we were comfortable and just knew that it would all be fine, you are so genuine and caring [now this is from two physicians!], we were really nervous, but felt at ease because you were so competent.
Your venue is simply amazing, our guests were spellbound, many were surprised that they had missed this little piece of heaven in their back yards!
Your team is dedicated, competent and were just marvelous

We a had a wonderful time, as did our guest, and we truly appreciate everything you and your staff did to make that possible.
Kate Brennan and Kristyn Pluchino, Married at Liberty House
My husband and I were thrilled with our experience planning and holding our wedding at Liberty House with Danielle Villa’s help. We chose Liberty House because we wanted laid-back elegance and a venue that would take care of most of the details while giving us the freedom to personalize our ceremony and reception -- that’s exactly what we got, delivered with such warmth and professionalism that we felt really confident our wedding would be exactly what we wanted (and it was). Danielle responded quickly and enthusiastically to all of our ideas and questions while we were planning everything, and she worked with my parents with the same patience and thoroughness. On the weekend of the wedding, the Liberty House staff took our personalized decorations (which required some assembly on their part) and the fair amount of equipment involved in a Jewish ceremony, and on the day of the wedding had everything impeccably set up and all of the ceremony gear ready and waiting -- we had nothing to do and nothing to stress about. The view of the city during the ceremony gave us absolutely gorgeous photos. The transitions between different parts of the day were seamless, and our guests loved the food, especially the marshmallows at the fire pits. The different spaces available to our guests -- dining room, spacious tent for dancing, the patio with comfy lounge chairs and beautiful gardens -- allowed everyone to enjoy themselves as they wanted. We can’t thank Danielle and Liberty House enough -- our wedding was beautiful and fun for everyone!
All the best,
Becca and Jason Machowsky, Married at Liberty House
The wedding at Liberty House was just fabulous. You could see that everyone was having a good time--relaxed, fun, happy. Rebecca and Jason had a wonderful day. Aren’t they adorable?

Win and I are driving up to the mountains now where there’s no cell service. We are staying at the lake house for the rest of the week. I didn’t want the week to go by without me letting you know that everything was perfect. My family can’t stop talking about “the best wedding ever”. Miriam was phenomenal as well.
Rave reviews will be made clear. I will miss our emails so I plan to continue to keep in touch.
You made our wedding the best day of our lives.

Reese and Chris Czaszynski, Married at Liberty House
We are now back from our honeymoon. I wanted to take the time and thank you for everything that you did to make our wedding day truly special. Words cannot fully describe how happy you made us. Your professionalism, your insight, your genuine care and concern truly made us feel special and helped to reassure us that we were in good hands. We honestly couldn’t have asked for more, you did EVERYTHING we wanted and more! We truly appreciate all you did for us and we will never forget it. A wedding day is something that takes a lot of planning, a lot of trust, and a lot of work, you made everything so easy for us. A HUGE thank you for all the emails, contacts, and reassurance you gave us after Hurricane Sandy, I would have never gotten through that two week span without you. Daniel , myself, and our families thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our wedding everything we could have ever hoped it could be.
Having said all that, I want to apologize for how things ended. The behavior of those guests is unacceptable and they shouldn’t have been our problem, but most importantly The Liberty House’s problem. I apologize from the bottom of my heart for their embarrassing display. We hope that we will be able to have other events at The Liberty House, we were truly blown away at how perfect you made our day.
Lots of love and thanks.
Kerri and Daniel Taylor, Married at Liberty House
Before too much time goes by I would like to tell you how wonderful it was to work with you. I walked into the party on Wednesday night with no worries that everything would go according to plan. Victor and Miriam were wonderful and always there to make sure things were taken care of. We are sure many of our guests have discovered your oasis on the Hudson and will be recommending it to others. We now have a special family place to come back to each year to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays (mine was on Friday) and I am sure each time we come we will remember in great detail every moment of that special night.
Ellen Seckler, MOB, Tracy and Ben’s Wedding
Again, I just wanted to tell you how terrific the wedding went and you deserve high praise for the way you (and Ellen) put it all together. We have received so many compliments on how great a venue the Liberty House was and I’m sure you will reap additional business from “word of mouth” from people that attended our affair.

A different approach: Trade Bridal Bootcamp for Mindful Maintenance
by Dominique DiCristo
Mental health is just as important as physical health during this time (and in life). So if your first thought was a crash course, regimented workout (slim down, tone up, see results), perhaps you might consider recasting your expectations and goals. Physical fitness is only one component of well-being. Physical health is not independent of mental health but rather the two work in tandem to create positive well-being.
A good place to start is Martha Stewart’s Get Wedding-Ready Guide: Fashion & Beauty. There you will find helpful information on beauty, nutrition, fitness, and stress management; tips on how to keep up with a fitness routine, (if you’re someone who likes routine), and simple guidelines for eating and drinking more healthily.
If you’re someone who exercises regularly but still wants to shake things up, consider what other elements of cross-training you can integrate into your routine. If you’re someone who does not exercise regularly but wants to start, then this is a great opportunity. Check in with yourself. What is your goal? Is it an acute episode of ‘good health’ that ends on your wedding day? Or is it sustained health, lasting results, and a general feeling of well-being? Don’t be extreme. Your efforts would be better spent working on small adjustments that, if implemented over the course of the engagement (and beyond!), will yield lasting results.
Fitness routines often steal the spotlight in times such as these, so it is important to remember that equal time should be invested in improving both physical AND mental health. Working towards balanced health will make your efforts more effective and efficient. It is important to achieve the look you want for yourself for your special day but (a) don’t be unrealistic with your goals; (b) remember, the goal is not to be a different person; (c) there’s enough stress as it is… so there is no need to put added pressure on yourself!
An effective goal is put yourself in a position in which you are perfectly poised to handle stress. This means avoiding hunger, and boosting energy and brain function. It’s about feeling good and feeling healthy and, remember, there are no hard and fast rules on what that feeling should look like. Be mindful of your stress levels and take care of yourself emotionally as well as physically.
One Day (not the one by David Nicholls)
by Dominique DiCristo
The average length of an engagement is 1-2 years. According to, “Real Simple: Wedding Planning and Budget Basics,” the venue is typically booked 16-9 months in advance and the entertainment, photographer, and caterer, 8 months in advance. Then there is the dress, 8-7 months in advance, the florist and bridesmaids dresses, 7-6 months, transportation, make-up artists, cake, invitations, rehearsal dinner, favors, readings, etc.
In short, your wedding is a momentous occasion that requires months of planning. That being said, the average wedding is 5 to 7 hours, then it is a memory. You will have many decisions to make in those months of planning, so if the decision whether or not to hire a videographer is one that you are struggling with, perhaps it is worthwhile to take a step back from the details of the wedding day and consider the memory that will remain.
There are moments of the day that you will not be a part of, for example, watching your guests arrive and the cocktail hour, because you will be either in transit or posing for formal pictures. It is important to somehow capture the fleeting moments, document those details, and watch how all those months of planning have paid off as your loved-ones enjoy and admire the preparation you have put into the day.
While nearly all weddings have professional photographers, approximately only 50% have videographers as well. Peter Ferriero of PF Films says, “pictures are great but with video, those moments come back to life. The bride can later watch what it was like for the groom to get ready and vice versa.” At PF Films (offices in New Jersey and Manhattan) wedding videography is cinematography because it is about synthesizing all the details of a single day and telling a cohesive story.
When choosing a videographer it is important to consider how you want your story to be told. Do you want the day to simply be documented à la traditional videography? Or do you want a more stylized type of storytelling in the fashion of current cinematography? The good news is that with the advancement of technology, having a videographer is not as big of a production as it once was. Cameras are smaller and it is easier to light a room, which means that filming is less disruptive and can be kept, if you want, “low-profile.”
Choosing a specific videographer will be like any other decision you will make regarding your wedding whether it’s selecting a photographer, DJ, florist, etc. Consider references, a portfolio of their past work, and, above all, personality. Meet with the videographer. Is this someone that understands and shares the vision you have for your day? Is he or she someone capable of capturing the memory you are crafting? There are package options to accommodate different budgets; it comes down to how you choose to invest in the re-telling of your special day.
The Perfect Marriage: Bride and Photographer
by Dominique DiCristo
Right now the market for wedding photography is huge and diverse but like any other market it is consumer driven. Jeffrey Vock, a wedding photographer based in Jersey City, Hoboken, and the Hudson County area, compares it to contemporary women’s fashion, “It is a mix of everything but in the end, there is something out there for everybody.”
You will hear individual photographers describe their style as illustrative, traditional, artistic, contemporary, photojournalistic, etc. and you will face a slew of package options, some basic and others extravagant but ultimately it comes down to, what do you want? How do you want your wedding day to be remembered?
Wedding photographer, Michael Dempsey, outlines several things to consider when meeting with a photographer: experience, references, samples of their work, and, if possible, samples of their previous work at your venue. If you are hiring by way of a larger studio that employs several photographers, be sure that you are meeting with the photographer who will actually be shooting your wedding and make certain your contract clearly states that that photographer is the one who will be present on your wedding day. (Dempsey has locations in Jersey City and Middletown, NJ).
When choosing a photographer, consider the complete album of a single wedding. Bear in mind the more formal portrait shots as well as the unique candid moments. How versatile do you want your album to be? Can a single photographer deliver the variety of shots you desire? Some can. Others have second or assistant photographers to help with that.
PERSONALITY. So you’ve seen the product and you are pleased but is the photographer someone you can work well with on your special day? Do you feel comfortable with the photographer? Do you trust his or her judgement? How will he or she interact with your family and friends? A positive working relationship will make for a more seamless and enjoyable wedding day for you and your guests.
Test the waters. See if you can arrange the engagement shoot as a way to see how you interact with each other and the kind of shots the photographer is capable of. Often times the engagement shoot is thrown into the package as a “freebie” (but rest assured, you are probably paying for it). Ask if the photographer is willing to hold the engagement shoot separate from the wedding package as a sort of non-binding way to feel things out.
There are competent photographers at each level of the price scale so first think about what is most important to you. Is it the particular product/style? Is it the personality of the photographer? Is it a bit of both? Ask around and trust your instincts!
DJ versus Live Band
So you’ve picked the venue. Next decision, the music. Live band? DJ? Both? How do you decide?
“First, decide your budget,” says Scott Horniak of Craig Scott Entertainment, a full-service entertainment agency with offices in New Jersey, Manhattan, and Westchester. A wedding appropriate DJ costs $2,000-$5,000 and a live band costs $5,000-$10,000. If you’re not fixed to shopping on one end or the other of this price range, then you might consider mixing and matching various elements to create a unique listening backdrop for your wedding celebration.
Next, advises Horniak, it is important to consider the energy level you wish to achieve and the environment you are trying to create, as well as the age range of your guests and what will be most unanimously entertaining.
In choosing a DJ, your musical options are basically limitless. That being said, it is extremely important to choose a “wedding appropriate DJ” or rather a DJ appropriate for your wedding.
Doing the necessary research is key, says Eric Bischoff, President of Sound Explosion, a disc jockey and production company headquartered in Staten Island. You should look for companies that have commercial style office space and location and consider their references and affiliates. This will help to distinguish high-quality DJ companies from hobbyist DJs. Secondly, meet with someone at the agency. Ask for pictures of their setup and discuss your preferred style of entertainment. How interactive do you want the DJ/MC to be with guests? What is your etiquette expectation?
Effective communication is essential to make sure that you and the DJ are on the same page about what is expected and what is delivered. It is important to trust your instinct when meeting and interviewing at the agency, says Bischoff. Remember that in choosing a DJ you have a great deal of flexibility and variability which allows for a highly customized experience. So be specific! And keep in mind all the fast, slow, active, and inactive moments of the evening.
A live band is inherently entertaining. The energy and elegance that comes from live vocalists and musicians is unmatched. Unfortunately, quality does come at a price and that price can be up to double what it costs for the the most expensive DJ.
Today, there are many “best of both worlds” solutions, such as band/DJ combos or an after-cake “after party.” Live aspects, such as vocalists and/or keyboards, percussion, etc. are being incorporated into DJ productions. For every issue of personal preference, budget, and mass appeal there is a compromise that can be reached. When it comes down to it, you are free to pull together whatever elements you see fit to create that ideal atmosphere you envision for your wedding celebration.
Make your BIG day stand out!
o Make a video to welcome your guests. You can also include these in your hotel bags for you’re out of town guests and include sights to see in the area, places to eat, etc.
o Create an indoor garden by lining your ceremony and/or venue space with topiaries, potted palm trees or vases filled with flowering branches so you don’t need to stress over the ever changing weather when having an outdoor event.
o Use a mix of couches and chairs for your ceremony or use a myriad of different vintage chairs for a more eclectic look.
o Make your day a reflection of who you are as a couple, add your favorite desserts to the menu or give them out as favors, name your tables after places you have traveled to together, or have the local jazz band you both love come play at your cocktail hour.
o Make your guests feel like they have traveled to another country. Create at Tuscan Garden feel, using farmhouse tables and glass vases filled with herbs and sunflowers or create a nautical feel using seersucker striped tablecloths and elegant wooden chairs.
o Instead of a Photo booth for your guestbook, do a video booth! Guests can sing a song dedicating it to you or say just a few sweet words!
o Hanging candles in glass orbs (LED candles of course), lanterns, multicolored tulle, and hanging flowers, all add interest to your event.
o Down time for your guests in between your ceremony and reception? Hire a tour bus to take them around your town or city, or if you’re having a countryside wedding, set up lawn games and refreshments to entertain your guests.
o Make your centerpieces your own. Are you or your future spouse into art? Put a box of leggos, wooden blocks or Lincoln logs to have your guest create their own centerpiece “sculpture”.
o Create your own signature cocktail that represents you both as the guests of honor. Come up with a fun name for it. Or create two cocktails, one to represent each of you.
o Everyone always looks at the Bride on the wedding day, but what about the Groom! Add some interest to his tux by incorporating funky colored socks, a patterned bow tie, converse sneakers or a fun hat. Make it go with your theme, downtown chic, vintage or sophisticated with flair.
o Display vintage photographs of your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles on their wedding day at your reception.
o Place a box with vintage postcards asking everyone to write some “marital advice”.
o Hire a dance troupe, flash mob or salsa dancers to get the party started and provide interesting and unexpected entertainment for your guests.
o Fireworks! If your venue allows, this is a great way to end your most memorable night!
Coming up with a sophisticated theme
o 25% of couples have themed weddings, courtesy of The Knot.
o Themes sometimes get a bad rap, but if you choose wisely, your theme will be a real hit and make your wedding stand out from the rest.
One of our Stone House brides, who works in publishing, had her bouquets and centerpieces made out of origami. The paper used was from the famous novel “Jane Eyre”, a story about a young woman who finally finds her love.
